The two mistakes every first-timer makes at Waco Surf are booking too late and arriving too late. Surf sessions usually book out about 2 months in advance, and first-time visitors need to arrive a full hour before their session. Get those two things right and everything else about the day is easy.
This guide covers the rest: how booking actually works, which session level to pick, what to bring, what to rent, and what the water feels like in every month of the year.
How booking works (and why timing matters)
Surfing at Waco Surf runs on scheduled one-hour surf sessions grouped by skill level. Reservations are strongly recommended because walk-ins are not guaranteed, and in practice sessions fill roughly 2 months out.
The release schedule is the detail most first-timers miss: public, space-available sessions are released 4 to 6 weeks before the month begins. So if you want to surf in October, watch for the October calendar to open in late August or early September and book immediately.
Two ways to jump the line:
- Stay overnight. Lodging guests get priority access to book surf sessions before they open to the public, and Stay & Surf guests are typically booked 1 to 4 months in advance.
- Book a private session. Private full-pool rentals follow their own availability and pricing by day and hour.
One rule to respect: sharing or splitting a public session between two people is not allowed, for safety and to protect wave counts for every paying guest.
Picking the right session level
Be honest here. Levels at Waco Surf are real skill gates, not marketing tiers, and guides group sessions by ability so everyone gets the wave they can ride.
- Learn to Surf: ages 5 and up, zero experience needed, coach push-ins, soft top included. Starts at $75.
- Beginner: ages 6 and up. You can paddle, catch gentle waves yourself and stand with balance. Soft boards under 9 feet only, rental included. Starts at $129.
- Intermediate: you know etiquette, paddle with strength, catch your own waves and turn frontside and backside. Chest to head high waves. Starts at $139.
- Advanced: steep drops, punchy sections, quick take-offs. The session page says it plainly: this wave is not for beginners or intermediate surfers. Starts at $159.
All public session prices are per person, per hour, plus tax, and vary with date and demand. Every surfer must be a proficient swimmer, and state law requires everyone in the lagoon to have a flotation device that supports their weight, so plan on wearing a life jacket during your session.
What to bring (and what to leave home)
The packing list on the surf and beach side is specific, so here is the short version.
Bring:
- Swimsuit, towel and a reusable water bottle
- A cooler with snacks and non-alcoholic drinks
- Your own surfboard or bodyboard if you have one
- Life jackets for kids if you prefer your own
- An umbrella or tent with bases or weights (poles cannot go into the sand, it damages the liner)
- A waterproof pouch for phone, ID and cards, because there are no lockers yet
- A valid physical ID if you plan to buy drinks
Leave home:
- Alcohol. The surf side is not BYOB; drinks are sold at the Dive Bar, Surf Cafe and Saloon, and your ID gets swiped once to join the free private club
- Anything glass
- Pets (service animals excepted, though they cannot enter any water)
- Grills of any kind on the surf side
- Drones, which are not permitted anywhere on the property
The water park side runs looser rules, including coolers with alcohol (beer and seltzers, no glass) and propane grills. Our water park overview and the official FAQ cover that side in detail.
Renting boards and wetsuits
No board, no problem. Rentals on site work like this:
- Performance boards: $45 plus tax for the first session, $20 plus tax for each additional same-day session
- Soft tops: $29 plus tax for the first session, then $14 plus tax per additional same-day session
- Board insurance: optional, $45 plus tax
- Wetsuits: $25 per person per day, offered in winter and early spring
Bringing your own board? Boards under 8 feet are recommended for public sessions because of pool depth, and beginner sessions are soft tops under 9 feet only.
When to go: water temperature by month
The lagoon operates year round, 8am to 8pm. What changes is the water. Waco Surf publishes this seasonal range:
| Months | Water temperature |
|---|---|
| March to April | 45 to 65°F |
| April to May | 60 to 75°F |
| May to June | 75 to 85°F |
| June to July | 80 to 90°F |
| August to September | 75 to 90°F |
| September to October | 65 to 80°F |
| October to November | 60 to 75°F |
| November to December | 45 to 65°F |
Summer is boardshorts-only, spring and fall are wetsuit-optional, and winter surfing is real with a rented wetsuit. If your trip includes the water park, remember it runs seasonally, typically early May to mid-September, while the surf lagoon runs all year.
Arrival day: the timeline that saves your session
- First visit: arrive 1 hour early. You will park (the back lot is free, VIP parking is $20 a day in peak season), check in, sign the digital waiver, sort rentals and get your bearings.
- Returning guests: 20 minutes early does it.
- The late rule is strict. More than 10 minutes late without contacting the resort and your spot may be canceled, with no refunds, credits or rebooks for missed sessions.
Signing your waiver online before you arrive saves time in line. If plans change, cancellations and rebooks are handled online or by emailing info@wacosurf.com under the cancellation policy.
Weather, spectators and other real-world questions
Weather. The resort operates rain or shine and all sales are final. Lightning within 10 miles clears the water and starts a delay; if the delay passes about 30 minutes, the session is canceled and Resort Credits are issued.
Swimming. Swimming in the lagoon is allowed only in the front, non-wave area, up to the curved concrete ridge. The wave zone is for surfers in sessions.
Dogs. Not allowed in the surf lagoon, beach area or water park attractions. Leashed dogs are welcome near Lemur Lagoon, and cabins allow one dog with a pet fee. Service animals are welcome on property but cannot enter any body of water due to health regulations.
Gift cards. They never expire for Waco Surf bookings, but they are one-time use, non-refundable, and not valid for on-site food or retail.
Bringing non-surfers? Spectators can buy a Surfer Companion Beach Pass, watch from the beach, book a cabana or swim in the designated swim zone at the front of the lagoon.
Photos. Professional photo and video packages through Flowstate start at $29, and session video plays on the lounge TVs afterward.
Questions before you book? There is no direct phone line for general questions; use the website chat or email info@wacosurf.com via the contact page.
Money-saving notes
A handful of legitimate ways to trim the bill:
- Pre-purchase online. Buying water park tickets ahead and signing the digital waiver before arrival saves time and sometimes money.
- Stack same-day sessions. Board rentals drop sharply for additional same-day sessions: $20 for a performance board and $14 for a soft top after the first rental.
- Stay overnight. Lodging guests get complimentary Beach Passes and 50% off water park passes purchased on site, plus the early session access.
- Military discount. Active duty and veterans get 10% off water park passes with a valid physical ID, purchased on site.
- Skip VIP parking. The back lot is free. The $20 VIP lot is a convenience, not a requirement.
Eating on site
You do not need to pack a full day of food unless you want to. Surfside Shack opens at 7am and serves until 8pm, which covers pre-session coffee and post-session recovery. The Saloon runs 4pm to 11pm, the Dive Bar and Surf Cafe hold down the surf side, and in season the Wedge Grill serves burgers and fries during water park hours while the Kona Ice Truck handles snow cones. Between those and your cooler of snacks, the day feeds itself.
Make it more than a day trip
Waco Surf sits at 5347 Old Mexia Road, 90 minutes from Dallas and Austin and about 3 hours from Houston, with major airports in all three cities for anyone flying in. That makes a day trip doable and an overnight better. Lodging guests get early session access, complimentary beach passes and 50% off water park passes purchased on site. If that sounds like the better version of the trip, our Stay & Surf guide maps out a full weekend.
